Eligibility, certification, and network charge compensation each have their own rules. Here are the questions we’re asked most often.
It’s the formal document issued by the Department for Business and Trade confirming your business’s exemption once your NACE code and electricity intensity test have been approved. You pass it to your electricity supplier so they can apply the exemption to your bills. Certificates typically last a year, and you’ll need to reapply before expiry and again if you switch electricity supplier during the certificate period, passing the certificate to your new supplier to keep the exemption active.
It’s a scheme that reduces electricity costs for energy-intensive manufacturers by exempting them from certain policy levies and compensating up to 90% of eligible network charges, sometimes referred to together as the British Industry Supercharger.
You need to manufacture a product under a qualifying 4-digit NACE code, be based in England, Scotland or Wales, and show that electricity spend equates to 20% or more of your gross value added.
Savings vary by business, but the combined value of the policy cost exemption and the increased network charge compensation is currently worth £65-£87 per MWh.
BICS uses SIC codes and a lower-intensity threshold, opening support to more manufacturers, with Year 1 applications running from 1 October to 30 November 2026 and support backdated to April 2026. You can’t claim both. Where you qualify for EII, it offers a higher level of support, so that’s the route to take first.
